Gainey is new Rec boss after Landon steps down

7th May, 2026

There has been a change in the management team at Athersley Recreation, the Macron NCEL Division One side has announced.

Rob Landon has stepped down as boss as, due to family commitments, he is unable to give the job full commitment, a statement by the Rec revealed.

His assistant Ben Calpin has departed as he cannot commit the time that the role requires whilst coach Richard Liversedge is also leaving his role.

Club owner Pete Goodlad said: "May I take this opportunity to thank Rob, Ben and Richard who have done an incredible job with our young squad and brought back a togetherness, a great atmosphere, and an exciting young side who did not get their just rewards."

Robbie Gainey has been appointed as the Rec's new boss, joining from Barnsley Town, building a partnership which will see his former club support the first team at Athersley.

He will be assisted by Landon who stays at the club in a deputy role, Ben Swain remains on the coaching staff, and media officer Ethan Hadfield will continue his role for the 2026/7 season.

Goodlad added: "Let's continue the positivity from last campaign and hope last season's experience will put us in good stead.

"Up the Penguins."
